New GM Commitment Confirms Michigan is Poised for Future Investment

A hearty congratulations to General Motors upon its formal announcement this morning of $7 billion to be invested in Michigan related to electric vehicle (EV) development.

This investment is expected to create 4,000 direct jobs in Michigan with a positive impact on our members in the supply chain. It also continues massive investments by automotive leaders GM, Ford and Stellantis across the U.S. and the globe as the industry fully engages in the rapidly evolving EV industry.

GM’s commitment reflects the possibilities that arise through the cooperation of businesses with local communities and the State of Michigan, as well as the support provided by Republicans and Democrats in the State Legislature and the Governor’s office. Our citizens, elected officials and business leaders have once again recognized the impact and importance of manufacturing to our employers and employees, their families and their communities. I congratulate our elected officials, specifically Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and Speaker of the House Jason Wentworth, for their hard work and diligence in bringing focus to our industry amidst the aggressive, competitive nature of economic development in other states. While I recognize and appreciate the various factors manufacturers must make in determining where to invest their efforts and capital, I’ll use GM’s announcement as proof that Michigan must be at the table with talent, a healthy business environment and tailored economic incentives to make our state competitive.

The MMA has and will continue to aggressively support legislation and agency support that encourages business investment and growth in our state. Building on the collaborative success in December that led to the creation of a pool of funds for strategic investments, we are now working with legislators and the Administration to provide greater support for our thousands of small businesses throughout the state.

Stay tuned for additional information regarding the same.
