In February 2017, the UIA announced that a computer “glitch” potentially exposed payroll data for 1.9 million people. In this instance, clients of 31 third-party payroll companies could access the personal data of employees working for another client of the same payroll company.
After investigation by the Michigan State Police (MSP), it was determined that no data was accessed or viewed outside those who have been given authority to do so.
Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution, the MSP has contacted employers who may have had the opportunity to view this information. Employers are being asked to complete an affidavit identifying whether they viewed the exposed data, listing employees who have UIA password access and confirming that any unauthorized information has been destroyed.
If you have received an email or letter from MSP, I encourage you to comply and would be happy to answer any questions you may have
