MMA Shows Support for Recognition of STEM Success

With more than 7,510 manufacturing positions still unfilled in Michigan and nationwide STEM jobs expected to grow by 11.8 percent by 2020, compared to 8.5 percent growth for all occupations, more must be done to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow.

Senate Bill 344, introduced by Senator John Proos, will be taken up by the House Committee on Workforce and Talent Development on Tuesday, 5/15/18, and would establish a STEM endorsement for pupils who successfully complete particular requirements while in grades 7 through 12.

“Careers in advanced manufacturing are heavily reliant on strong math and science skills and our members tell us they want the best and the brightest to run their plants and their equipment,” said Delaney McKinley, MMA senior director of government affairs and membership. “We believe that SB 344 will encourage students to more fully invest in science and math courses which will provide them the skills today’s workforce demands.”

Contact your local Representative and urge them to support SB 344 and MMA’s continuing effort to promote skilled trades training across Michigan.
