MMA Joins Governor Snyder for UI Bill Signing

MMA joined Governor Snyder and other supporters of reforming Michigan’s unemployment insurance system last week during a ceremonial bill signing for legislation passed in December 2017 to curb the proliferation of imposter claims, prevent UI fraud and improve the employer noncompliance determination process.

Public Acts 225-232 of 2017 combat critical issues which have affected Michigan’s employer-financed unemployment system in recent years, including identity theft that has plagued the system with imposter claims. This bipartisan effort has strengthened the identity verification processes to prevent imposter claims and established a clear and communicative process for employers and affected individuals to report imposter claims.

Since the implementation of the legislation, the Unemployment Insurance Agency has seen an 81 percent reduction in the number of fraudulent unemployment filings and the successful conviction of 16 imposter fraud schemes.

The package also includes carefully negotiated reforms proposed by claimant advocates.

The legislation was originally signed into law by Governor Snyder on 12/20/17.
