Data Breach Notification Bill Likely to Move without MMA Amendments

MMA, together with like-minded members of Michigan’s business community presented reasonable clear amendments that would have made the process more feasible for businesses and bring these organizations into support for HB 4187. A memo submitted to the committee identifies a list of seven changes reflective of agreed-upon changes to similar legislation introduced in 2018 which will establish a clear and credible process for businesses to prevent, investigate and respond to data breaches.

“Today’s manufacturing companies recognize the importance of practical and comprehensive cyber security legislation,” testified Delaney McKinley, MMA senior director of government affairs and membership, on 2/20/19. “During the last legislative session, MMA worked to find language that strikes the right balance between meaningful data breach notification requirements and a pragmatic recognition for how business is conducted in both small and large companies.”

MMA will continue to work with legislators during the legislative process in order to ensure the crucial amendments are added. Read the full memo online and contact MMA’s Delaney McKinley, at 517-487-8530 or mckinley@mimfg.org, for more information.
