Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is a crucial, transformational element in the workplace as well as within our society.

As the Association representing the largest industry in Michigan, it is incumbent upon us all to address the importance of equal treatment of all people. There is no room for hatred, racism, or intolerance in the manufacturing industry. We are committed to standing by our members and the communities where they operate to advance solutions that will embrace all people and build a brighter and better tomorrow.

Why DEI Matters

The long-term competitiveness and success of Michigan’s manufacturing industry is contingent upon a strong and diverse talent pool. In turn, the ability to attract, engage and retain a strong workforce requires inclusive workplaces and continuous improvement.

As noted in the Manufacturing Institute’s Diversity + Inclusion Benchmarking in Manufacturing report, manufacturers “acknowledge the value of a diverse and inclusive workforce and are working to close the gap between intent and execution of practices that would support such a workforce in the long term.”

Companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 21% more likely to outperform on profitability
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) estimates that each lost employee could cost the company 50%-250% of their annual salary
According to Gallup, a disengaged employee costs an organization approximately $3,400 for every $10,000 of salary

Company Productivity & Retention

A diverse and inclusive workforce benefits productivity and ROI, but it also contributes to a happy and healthy work environment. Catalyst, a non-profit that works with companies on issues related to inclusion and gender disparity, surveyed 2,100 employees in 2019 and found positive experiences of inclusion explained 49% of team problem-solving abilities, 35% of work engagement and 20% of intent to stay at the organization.
Diverse companies are 3x more likely to retain Millennials for more than 5 years.

These quarterly interactive virtual sessions are free to MMA members and will help identify tactics and resources needed to launch meaningful initiatives or support existing efforts.
