Based in Livonia, 74-year-old Storch® Products Company specializes in engineered magnetic solutions, including the manufacturing of magnetic conveyors and magnetic sweepers, as well as designing and supplying more than 400 million custom, made-to-order magnets for other manufacturers’ products. Storch’s engineered solutions are larger, stronger, safer and more durable than anything else on the market. President Matt Carr says the company pushes the boundaries of how magnets can be used, often operating at the far edges of what’s considered possible.

Storch’s newest conveyor solution is literally groundbreaking in the industry — an in-ground, centralized magnetic conveyor system that collects scrap metal from multiple magnetic conveyors and moves it through a single underground main line.

“If you think of it like a tree, we’re not just building the branches — we’re feeding the trunk,” Carr explains. “These underground conveyors move scrap toward an incline conveyor that runs side-to-side and fills dumpsters as large as the back of a semitruck. By taking the system underground, manufacturers can keep scrap moving continuously while eliminating the need for individual scrap hoppers at each stamping press, regaining a significant amount of floor space and reducing traffic on the plant floor. We’ve completely reimagined what’s possible by applying magnetic slide conveyor technology at this scale.”

Carr says Storch embraces a philosophy of extraordinary but simplified innovation, applied not only to its conveyors but across many of its solutions.

How We Motivate

We share profits and run on EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) so everyone knows what they’re accountable for. Owning a role motivates people to perform at their best.

“I think we’ve built a culture here where we’re not going to build junk just for the sake of building something, and we’re not going to waste our time,” Carr says. “We’re not going to put our brand on anything that isn’t shocking — in a great way  — in terms of performance and exceeding quality expectations. That’s what Made in America used to mean, and it still does here today.”

Storch is recognized around the world for the longevity and superior safety of its products, Carr adds.

“It didn’t always look like this at Storch, but we’ve been very intentional about building a brand known for quality and long-term performance,” Carr adds. “Customers may invest a little more up front, but they get significantly more value over the life of the equipment.”

Storch’s magnetic conveyors are designed to last 10 to 15 years with minimal maintenance and little to no parts replacement, reducing downtime that would otherwise disrupt production. With no belts to replace or external moving parts, the simplified design also improves safety by minimizing the risk of hair, clothing or hands becoming caught.

Our Next Goal

Build Storch into an eight-figure business and attract the next generation into manufacturing by showing them it’s meaningful, challenging and full of opportunity.

One Skill Everyone Should Have

Everyone should understand the process well enough to execute it correctly and recognize when something isn’t right.

SuperMag® is Storch’s award-winning permanent magnetic sweeper, earning the Michigan Manufacturers Association’s 2023 Manufacturing Innovation Excellence Award. Built around simplicity and longevity, the SuperMag is designed to last for generations, using a single hydraulic cylinder to rotate a permanent magnet and switch the magnetic field on or off — eliminating the need for wires, coils, or electrical power.

The SuperMag can be towed or mounted on a wide range of equipment, including MDOT trucks, skid steers, tractors and fork trucks, making it highly versatile across municipal, construction and industrial applications. The design represents the epitome of simple yet hard-core engineering — exactly what Storch set out to achieve.

Carr says he has seen so many fun and challenging applications of magnets over his 30-year career that the work never becomes boring or mundane.

How We Innovate

We push boundaries for the fun of it and solve tough problems in our niche, which has let us break records and open new markets.

“As they’ve continued to become stronger and stronger with advancements and technologies, we've been able to do things with magnets that are still surprising me today, 30 years later,” he says.

Carr notes that designing an electrically charged magnetic sweeper for the U.S. military ranks among Storch’s proudest accomplishments. Within 24 hours of the initial call, Storch delivered a conceptual solution for a product that did not yet exist commercially. The specialized SuperMag-E variant was required to perform reliably across the world’s most extreme operating environments — from freezing Arctic conditions to sea-level installations — while maintaining the capability to remove heavy rebar from crushed as well as foreign object debris from military runways worldwide, ultimately becoming a significant and enduring product offering for the company.

With magnetic conveyors and sweepers, an in-house magnetic testing lab and thousands of wholesale magnets, Storch engineer tailor solutions for customers from start to finish, serving as a true partner in innovation for manufacturers throughout Michigan and North America.
