MMA-Supported Talent Legislation Earns Senate Support
Senate Bill 343 (Senator John Proos, R-St. Joseph) would require the board of a school district or board of directors of a public school academy, as part of the process of developing an educational development plan, to ensure that pupils were provided with the most recent analysis of in-demand occupations in the region in which the school district, intermediate school district or public school academy is located, provided by the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives in the Department of Technology, Management & Budget.
Senate Bill 344 (Senator John Proos, R-St. Joseph) would amend the Revised School Code to establish a STEM endorsement for pupils who successfully complete particular requirements while in grades 7-12.
“Michigan cannot afford to wait on improving student access to the facts and figures which show more than three million manufacturing jobs will need to be filled nationwide over the next decade, nor can they wait on providing students the viable skills to do those jobs,” says Mike Johnston, MMA vice president of government affairs. “This legislation helps both students and manufacturers connect in creating rewarding careers in manufacturing.”
Both bills passed the Senate 37-0, with one abstention, and have been referred to the House Committee on Workforce and Talent Development. MMA anticipates action on this legislation soon and members are encouraged to contact MMA for more information.
