MMA-Supported UI Reform Bills Gain Unanimous House Approval

The legislation is the product of hundreds of hours of discussion from a bipartisan workgroup comprised of elected officials, legislative staff, business community representatives, claimant advocates, Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) leadership and the MMA.

The bills combat critical issues which have affected Michigan’s employer-financed unemployment system in recent years, including identity theft that has plagued the system with imposter claims.

“Manufacturers want to see strong reforms to curb the proliferation of imposter claims within Michigan’s unemployment system and to prevent fraud,” said Delaney McKinley, MMA senior director of government affairs and membership. “This bipartisan effort will strengthen identity verification processes to prevent imposter claims and establish a clear and communicative process for employers and affected individuals to report imposter claims.”

“On behalf of MMA and the thousands of businesses impacted by fraud each year, we want to thank Representative Joseph Graves and Representative Kevin Hertel for leading the workgroup that brought about these important reforms, as well as bill sponsors Representative Diana Farrington, Representative Martin Howrylak, Representative Beau LaFave, Representative Joseph Bellino Jr., Representative Wendell Byrd, and Representative Phil Phelps for championing these bills and providing a clear, comprehensive solution to a growing problem,” said McKinley.

The legislation was sent to the Senate where it will be referred to a committee for review.

"We look forward to swift action by the Senate on this important legislation,” concluded McKinley.
