LANSING, Mich. — Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed April 30 through May 6 Small Business Week in Michigan, celebrating the resiliency and contributions of small businesses and entrepreneurs. According to a new report, Michigan continues to see strong small business growth with 12,000 new small business applications submitted in March of this year. 

“Michigan’s small businesses are the foundation of our economy and anchor communities in every region of our state,” Governor Gretchen Whitmer said. “During Small Business Week—and every week—I encourage Michiganders to support local small businesses and recognize our small business owners and entrepreneurs for their innovation, grit, and faith in Michigan. Because of them, we will continue building our economic momentum, and with 75,000 jobs added year over year, I know our future is bright.” 

“Michigan’s small business owners work hard every day to enrich our communities,” Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist said. “We know that no business is small to the person who owns it. That is why I encourage every Michigander to support a small business this week. Let’s work together to make Michigan the best place to grow a business, pursue an enterprise, and make a difference.” 

Annually, April 30 through May 6 has been recognized as Small Business Week since 1963. Michigan is home to a robust network of resources ready to help small businesses launch, stabilize and grow through the support of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Small Business Services and Solutions team. 

“Over the past year small business owners have weathered the continuing effects of the pandemic and other barriers to their success, and yet they continue to persevere and survive, and many are thriving which is a testament to the small business owner’s intestinal fortitude,” said Laketa L. Henderson, Michigan District Director, U.S. Small Business Administration. “Small Business week recognizes their achievements and importance in our local economies, and how they support neighborhoods and communities by generating wealth, creating employment which drives the U.S. economy.” 

“Small businesses are the heart of the Michigan economy,” 4 Flutes Machining President, Zach Bishop said. “Starting and operating a small business can be daunting but celebrating risk taking to fill a gap in goods or services, generate value, and to create jobs is worth it and the rewards are endless. Celebrating Small Business Week means celebrating the best of Michigan.” 

“Manufacturers are the backbone of the Michigan economy and the vast majority of manufacturers are small businesses,” said John J. Walsh, President & CEO of the Michigan Manufacturers Association. “Eighty five percent of MMA members have fewer than 100 employees and these innovative, driven and philanthropic job-providers support communities large and small across our Great Lakes State. We welcome and appreciate some well-deserved recognition for the men and women that continue to persevere and drive our economic recovery.” 

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses comprise more than 98 percent of Michigan businesses and employ half of Michigan workers. For every $100 spent at a local business, roughly $68 stays in the local economy, allowing business and job growth. 

In addition, according to the Michigan Retailers Association, one in five Michigan jobs are in the retail industry. Governor Whitmer is committed to supporting small businesses as Michigan continues growing its economy.
